Carlo Costa, Silos (n/n 015)
In the summer of 2018, while in Rome, Carlo recorded a long-form improvisation inside an old grain silo. For the recording he solely used found objects that were close by: branches, bricks, logs, metal pipes, stones, gardening tools, etc. The piece explores the reverberant acoustics of the silo and the interaction between Costa’s gestures and the sounds of the surrounding environment: cicadas, passing vehicles and planes, dogs barking, etc.

“Als de muzikant de ruimte nagenoeg vult met door hem gemaakte klanken, weet hij dat op zo’n manier te doen dat je met de ogen dicht het gevoel krijgt erbij aanwezig te zijn. Alleen al in het tegen elkaar slaan van twee stenen schuilt een wereld van klank en emotie door de ambiance waarin dat gebeurt. Het werk is geen aaneenschakeling van fragmenten of geluiden, maar een instant compositie die zowel spontaan als weldoordacht overkomt. Dat laatste lijkt onwaarschijnlijk omdat alles in het moment geschiedt, maar Costa lijkt zich zeer bewust van de klanken die hij met zijn bewegingen en voorwerpen in de akoestiek van de silo teweegbrengt. Het hele concept is indrukwekkend in zijn eenvoud en lofwaardig in zijn originaliteit.” (May 4, 2021)
“The single 35 minute track is part field recording, part free improvisation with the capture of the cicadas constant hum, the wind in the nearby pine and eucalyptus trees, and traffic. Costa utilized the found objects as his percussion instruments producing various reverberations within the confined space of the silo.
